While I appreciate the time off work, I’ve never been that keen on holidays. As Karen Blixen says of her lover Denys in Out of Africa (please bare with me): “He likes giving gifts… but never at Christmas.” It seems false to me to only be generous or romantic when it’s expected of you. But on the other hand, I can see and appreciate how the excuse of a holiday can give you the opportunity to surprise loved ones… to elevate the normal routine, and — maybe I’m getting sentimental in my old age — but I have to admit the idea of a holiday solely dedicated to love is growing on me… if only that’s what we decided Valentine’s is. Chocolates, roses, candy hearts be damned — why can’t the 14th of February be about everyone in your life that you love?
